FOSS Games, Part II

I got a lot of wonderful feedback on my original FOSS Games are actually pretty good! article, and I wanted to share with you all the information that was so kindly shared with me.

Here are some FOSS games highly recommended by the community, although I have not personally played most of them:

  • 0AD - "A multiplayer online game where you command an ancient empire." According to one Fediverse commenter, it has a very good soundtrack and design.

  • AAAAXY - "A nonlinear 2D puzzle platformer taking place in impossible spaces." (Android Port)

  • Angband - Text-based single-player dungeon exploration game

  • Battle for Wesnoth - A turn-based strategy game

  • Beyond All Reason - Realtime strategy game

  • Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead (CDDA) - Post-apocalyptic 2D turn-based survival game

  • Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup - "An open source roguelike adventure through dungeons filled with dangerous monsters in a quest to find the mystifyingly fabulous Orb of Zot."

  • Falling Lightblocks a clone of a very popular Soviet tetromino-based bame. Available for Android and Desktop

  • FeudalTactics - Medieval strategy game for Android

  • FlightGear - An excellent and realistic flight simulator

  • FreeCIV - A FOSS take on the Civlization series of games

  • Fruity Game (Android) - Not sure what this is, but the commenters seemed to indicate it is super addictive. I'm almost afraid to try it. ;)

  • Heroes - Similar to Tron, "you must maneuver a small vehicle around a world and collect powerups while avoiding obstacles, your opponents' trails, and even your own trail."

  • HyperRogue - A top-down heptagon non-Euclidian rogue-likegame

  • Me and My Shadow - Puzzle/Platformer

  • Nethack - Still being updated!! "...an open source single-player roguelike video game," according to Wikipedia

  • Neverball - a FOSS game inspired by "Super Monkey Ball" (GameCube, 2001)

  • Oolite - an amazing recreation of the original Elite game of the 8-bit era

  • OpenTTD - Transportation-oriented business simulation game

  • OSU - "A free-to-win rhythm game. Rhythm is just a click away!" (source)

  • Simon Tatham's Puzzles - Puzzles created by the author of PuTTY

  • Star Control 2: The Ur-Quan Masters - (not sure??)

  • Unciv - Civilization V remake for Android & Desktop

  • Veloren - A voxel-based action/adventure multiplayer role-playing game (this looks pretty cool!!)

  • Widelands - "a free, open source real-time strategy game with singleplayer campaigns and a multiplayer mode."

  • Xonotic - "The Free and Fast Arena Shooter" (an FPS)

  • xskat (Android) - A version of the German card game, "Skat." (F-Droid link)
